German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Tara

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $350
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Size: 68 Pounds
  • Current Age: 9 Years 2 Months (best estimate)
Tara is a gorgeous 3 year-old girl who is sweet, smart, and active. Tara loves chew toys, LOVES to play ball, and brings the ball right to your feet.  She knows her basic commands: sit, stay, wait, come, down, kennel...  She will stand and wait for her feet to be wiped after coming back indoors. She goes into kennel easily. She is treat-motivated, loves to catch treats in the air, but will also take them gently from your hand.

Tara loves to play in the water (sprinklers, hoses, baby pools). She enjoys car rides. She is a talker, and also a cuddly girl who loves to be petted. Tara really enjoys her walks and gets very excited! She is working on not pulling on the leash and is doing well.

It's very important for all GSDs to be on a high-quality diet. But this is especially important for Tara, who has some food and seasonal allergies. Tara can get itchy at times, which is alleviated with allergy meds and vet follow-up for her allergies as needed. Being on a high-quality raw dehydrated diet (Honest Kitchen Beef) has also really helped Tara.

Tara is a friendly, sociable girl that does well with people she meets both inside the home, on walks, and at events. Tara is a typical active youngster, smart, always on the go, and will need an active home that will be able to dedicate plenty of time to exercising her, taking her out on outings, and provide plenty of mental and physical stimulation. Tara is a great dog, very loyal, intelligent, and extremely sweet.

Tara's adoption fee is $350, all of which goes back into offsetting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (treated if positive), and microchipped. Learn more about the adoption process and requirements, and apply at: http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption.
