German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

Gage is a 7.5 month-old puppy whom we rescued from a reservation in SD. Reservation dogs lead a very hard life, with no shelter, little food, and no vet care. Many of them die due to accidents, deprivation, and/or sickness among other causes. In fact, Gage came into rescue with some hair loss, scabs, itching and considerable discomfort, due to a case of Sarcoptic mange. Gage is fully recovered, his gorgeous coat has come back nicely, and he is ready for a forever home!

Gage is a stunning, large puppy, with a medium/long coat. He loves chew toys, bones, balls, and likes to play fetch. He is all puppy, full of energy and mischief at times. Gage hasn't had a lot of training or socialization yet, as he spent the first 6 weeks after coming into rescue under quarantine, due to his mange. He is currently working on basic commands, is learning to take items nicely and he is working on not mouthing. Gage is a great pup!

Gage is potty trained. He is friendly and very playful with other dogs. Gage could play all day, and doesn't always get the message when the other dog has had enough and is done playing ;). Because of that, Gage would do best with other playful dogs who will be able to match his energy level, and who will be tolerant of his enthusiastic, hands-on playstyle.

** Health Note: Gage has recently sustained a soft tissue injury, probably playing too hard, and is currently on 2-4 weeks of crate rest. He can still be adopted, but we want his potential adopters to be aware that he needs to be on restricted mobility for 1-3 more weeks, to allow the muscle to heal **

Like all German Shepherd puppies and youngsters, Gage will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.
