German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About London

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $295
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 13 Years 9 Months (best estimate)

London is a gorgeous, amazing 7 y.o. girl, who is intuitive, very gentle, and lovely with her beautiful doe eyes! London was part of a neglect case and ended up on death row at a Midwest shelter, due to lack of space. One of our amazing volunteers drove 16+ hours to pick up London and Ghost, and bring them to safety. London is an easy-going girl who is always up for a long walk, sunbathing on the patio, or lounging and cuddling on the couch with you. Whatever you would like to do, London is ready to join you! One of her very favorite things to do is go for car rides! London can hardly wait to load up in the car and she is an excellent rider.   London listens very well and learns quickly.

London is a typical GSD, in that she has a few quirky and endearing habits. For instance, she will try very, very hard to engage you in play by doing some serious-sounding barking, or a low growl, all while her tail wags hard! She is also not totally fond of being kenneled and will occasionally decide she's had enough and will graciously and without a fuss pop the latch to let herself out, and her foster family will find her nonchalantly lounging on the couch.

London is a fantastic girl, a fabulous GSD, who truly has it all. She is smart, loving, fun, entertaining, and she is a lovable,  perfect companion. London has excellent leash manners too. She can be a bit picky about other dogs and they need to respect her space and give her time to come around. She would do best in a home as the only dog, or with an easy-going, mature male. London does very well with teen children, and does a wonderful job meeting new people. She is truly a charming girl.

Reminder: Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills.
