German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Lucrezia (Luce). New name: Ruby

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $425
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 7 Years 8 Months (best estimate)

Lucrezia (Lucy or Luce around the house) is an Italian name meaning ‘profit or wealth,’ which is fitting for this pup, because someone is going to hit the jackpot when they adopt her!

Luce is a five month old typical GSD puppy – she is incredibly playful, and puts the adult dogs in the house through their paces constantly! Once she’s worn out, though, Luce is one of the most loving, cuddly GSD pups you’ll ever meet. She is learning how to occupy herself with toys, and really loves a good bone.

Luce is also incredibly smart, and has quickly picked up on potty training and is starting on basic commands in her foster home (she’s always ready to show off her sitting if there’s a treat involved). When Luce first came into rescue, she lacked any potty-training and was very timid, with lots of submissive and excitement urination whenever anyone approached her or her crate. However, with a few weeks of structure, cuddles, and confident dogs to be her role models, she’s come out of her shell and continues to gain confidence every day. She will need someone who understands her past and is patient as she continues to gain more confidence. Luce would be great in a home with other dogs, as long as they’re playful, or at least patient with a very playful puppy!

Like all German Shepherd Dogs, Australian Cattle Dogs, and other herding breed mixes that we have in rescue, Luce will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog.

Reminder: Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills.
