German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Holly. Nka Meeka

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $350
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Size: 48 Pounds
  • Current Age: 6 Years 3 Months (best estimate)

Holly is a sweet, gorgeous young girl who had a litter of puppies on Dec 6th. Prior to rescue, Holly and her puppies were staying out in the cold, in below-freezing temperatures. Holly was extremely skinny, and her the pups needed a good deworming, vetting, TLC, and nourishment. They are the sweetest little family and Holly is the absolute best mom, and a fabulous girl with a wonderful temperament!

Holly is currently gaining weight and anjoying lots of attention and love in her foster home, with her babies. Holly is currently nursing her babies who are almost 6 weeks old. Although none of them are quite ready for adoption yet, they will be ready very soon, and we are currently taking applications for Holly's babies.

Holly is sweet with just a touch of shyness, but lots of tail wags! She loves being petted and getting attention from people. She gives lots of kisses when she greets people. At about 48 lbs, she is a really cute, medium-sized girl! Holly gets along very well with all the other dogs in her foster home and ignores the cats. Holly has not learned to play with the toys or food puzzles in the house yet, but likes to chew on treats such as bully sticks and bones. She is a very loving mom to her pups, and she enjoys hanging out with the other household dogs as well. She is a really good girl! She walks well on leash, doesn't mind being crated or confined to one room, and seems to be potty-trained. She knows sit and she is sweet and eager to please. She is a great, well-behaved little girl, that will be a phenomenal addition to a very lucky household!

Holly's adoption fee is $350, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs.  We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.

Like any of our dogs, Holly would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that her breed needs. Because of that, Holly's ideal owner will have prior GSD, or other herding breed experience. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills, and manners.
