German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Dorset. Nka Daisy

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $275
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Size: 33 Pounds
  • Current Age: 4 Years 8 Months (best estimate)

Dorset came into rescue, no more than a baby herself, but already caring for five babies (Meatball, Lamb Chop, Ribeye, Scrapple, and Confit), and doing a phenomenal job - she's one of the most patient, gentle, protective mamas that HUGS has ever seen!

Now that Dorset's babies have been adopted, Dorset can learn how to be a puppy herself. From what we can tell, Dorset must have been kept outdoors most of her life and must have had few, if any, positive human interactions before being rescued. Even though she's barely a year old, when she arrived, she was terrified of people. Luckily, she loves food and tasty tidbits (this tiny gourmet has a fondness for deli meat and cheese!). Thanks to tasty treats, time, and a lot of patience, Dorset, has been slowly overcoming her fear, warming up, and discovering that life is not so scary after all! Now that she's realized that life can be fun, people can be good, and that she's safe, she's really enjoying being part of the pack in her foster home. She's still shy, but she's showing us her sweet, affectionate side, and she just wants to be included in all the family activities!

Dorset LOVES going for walks with both of her furry foster siblings, and she walks beautifully on a loose leash, a skill that many dogs never manage to master! Dorset does well with both a young, boisterous foster sister, as well as a big, more mature foster brother, and she gets along with dogs of all sizes. Dorset loves other dogs and feels more confident with a dog buddy that she can watch for cues, learn from, and play with. Because of that, we would really like for her to have another dog in her adoptive home.

Dorset warms up to women much quicker than men (much to her foster dad's chagrin!), but with time and patience, she will come around to anyone. Her favorite thing is gentle cuddles, and once she realizes a human is willing to pet her softly, Dorset is in love. Dorset is now crate-trained and is doing wonderfully with potty-training with regular potty breaks and good supervision. While she is doing great, this is all very new to her. She would love a home with a loving, patient human who is around for a lot of the day to continue helping her adjust and blossom.

Dorset would likely do best in a home without children, given how easily she frightens, but that may change as she continues to gain confidence in her foster home.

Dorset's adoption fee $275 all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs.  We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.

Like all Border Collies, Cattle Dogs, GSDs, and other herding breeds and mixes, Dorset will need positive reinforcement training, consistency, boundaries, activity and socialization. Dorset's ideal home will be a household with a good routine and prior Border Collie (or other herding breed) experience. Like any of our dogs, sweet Dorset will make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, activity and mental stimulation that her breed requires. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills and manners.
