German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Harriette (Hope’s Puppy)

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $395
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 3 Years 4 Months (best estimate)

Harriette is one of Hope’s thirteen puppies. Hope is a sweet, gorgeous girl. Prior to rescue, Hope (who was heavily pregnant) had been at the shelter. Luckily, we were able to get her out before she had a litter of puppies on November 18, 2020. Hope is incredibly sweet and she was immediately grateful and relieved to get to safety with her babies. Hope and all of her thirteen puppies have been thriving in their foster home together and are ready for foster to adopt homes of their own.

Harriette is an adorable 9 week-old girl puppy. She is very smart and has just learned "come" and "sit" and "down"! She now sits everytime she wants something, and its adorable!

Harriette is a little pup with a big personality! She is very playful, a little bit sassy, and such a sweetheart! Harriette loves to play especially with her big foster brother! Her favorite toys are tennis balls (she loves to roll them and chase after them), bones to chew on, and ropes to tug with her big brother! She likes stuffed toys to play with while falling asleep in her kennel (she gets so tired of playing, she eventually just ends up cuddling the toy – I think it’s like having a sibling sleeping beside her). Harriette LOVES food! She will sit in the kitchen and look up at the counter waiting for food, even when it’s not food time! It’s important to keep this energetic girl busy! Since she loves food, it did not take long for her to learn to sit! She will sit and wait for her food and sit to be let in and outside. She is a very smart girl!

She is working on leash walking and "down"! She's has the most adorable little expressions! She is doing very well with kennel training and and potty-training, but she is just a puppy, and will continue to need to work on both.  Harriette rides well in the car.  She is an adorable pup that can be a little bit sassy at times, but only because she is very smart and will tell you exactly what she wants! She is a vocal girl and will let you know what she is thinking! If she wants food, which is most of the time, she will sit and point at it. If she wants outside, she will sit and wait. If she wants to be held, she will sit down at your feet and talk to you until you pick her up. If she wants to play, she will bring you the toy. And believe me, she knows how to use those puppy eyes to get what she wants! Harriette still nibbles a bit on hands so that is one thing to watch for. She is very confident and not timid at all. She sleeps through the vacuum and her foster brother playing with squeakers and is not nervous to meet other dogs or people. She is a very sweet, sociable girl. Harriette has melted everyone’s heart the minute they meet her. She is such a cuddler. She loves to bury her head in your arms, lay across your neck, and fall asleep with her head in your hand. She will melt your heart the second you bring her home with all her love and puppy kisses!

Like all German Shepherd and mix puppies, Harriette will need training, consistency, boundaries, and lots of activity and socialization, in order to become a well-balanced, well-behaved dog. Harriette's ideal home will be a household with prior GSD or similar experience, with good leadership skills and structure, and a playful doggy sibling.

The adoption fee for Hope’s puppies is $395, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs.  We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped.

Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply. Like any of our dogs,  puppies would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that her breed needs. Because of that, Hope’s puppies’ ideal owners will have prior GSD, or other herding breed experience. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills, and manners.

Please review the information in the "About Us", "Important Considerations" and "Adopt" sections on our website menu, as it contains useful information about the breed, adoption fees, the adoption process and our requirements, and how meeting the dogs works.
