Mars needs a caretaker or foster! Won't you consider helping him get a new start?

German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Mars

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $350
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Size: 92 Pounds
  • Current Age: 5 Years 11 Months (best estimate)
Mars is a handsome, incredibly sweet boy, that we rescued from a puppy mill, with a group of 3 other German Shepherds. Mars is a gentle, lovely, big boy, with a sweet, playful side. This gorgeous boy has an amazing temperament, and is the whole package!

Mars is a very sweet, silly boy. He may be a little shy at first but once he gets a feel for his surroundings his goofy, playful side shines through. He loves following his humans around, and seeing what they are up to. Need a helping hand? He is your guy! Mars loves all the snuggles you could give, and will reciprocate with kisses. Mars is doing great at potty-training and loves meal time! He recently discovered how fun walks can be and all the exciting smells this new world has to offer. He has been doing wonderful on the leash and would excel with continued training. Mars would do great in an active home and would thrive with continued training and positive reinforcement. Mars is doing well with crate training but does not love being alone.
He would do best with pet parents who are home a lot, and where he would normally not need to be alone more than 4-6 hours at a time. Mars also would love to have a dog buddy for companionship. He loves to play with other dogs, and he shares toys with no issues. He is a sweet, gentle giant. Mars loves everything and everyone. He is the sweetest, friendliest boy, and he will melt your heart.

Like any of our dogs, this sweet, handsome boy would make a great addition to an active home that will provide the love, structure, good leadership, activity and mental stimulation that this breed needs. Because of that, Mars's ideal owner will have prior GSD or other herding breed experience, and a friendly dog buddy for Mars. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, please remember that you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings, in order to provide sufficient stimulation, ward off boredom, and work on leash skills, and manners.

Mars's adoption fee is $350, all of which goes back into offseting our high-cost vetting expenses and rescuing more dogs.  We are a 100% volunteer-run rescue group and rely on adoption fees and donations to continue saving lives. Adoption fees include spay/neuter, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, fecal, deworming, flea/tick and heartworm preventative, heartworm tested if old enough (and treated if positive), and microchipped. Please visit http://heartlandgsrescue.rescuegroups.org/info/adoption for more information about our adoption process and requirements, and to apply.
