German Shepherd dogs, as well as the other herding breeds that we have in rescue, are highly active, energetic, working breeds. They require considerable vetting, exercise, socialization, training, leadership and mental stimuli in order to be well-adjusted, well-balanced, and well-mannered dogs. Even if you exercise and play with your dog daily in your fenced yard, you MUST still take your dog out on daily walks and outings in order to work on his/her leash skills, manners, and social skills. These breeds make great additions to active families who will pamper them, but who will also work with them, as they are smart dogs who need leadership, structure, plenty of activity and mental stimulation.

If you are new to German Shepherds (and other herding breeds), please research the breed to make sure this is the dog for you. We ask that you consider the time and financial commitment that your German Shepherd (or other herding breed) dog will require before applying for one. Please review the section on our website (www.heartlandgsrescue.org) "Is a HUGS Dog Right for You?" for additional information.

About Zeke. New name: Panzer

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $350
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 11 Years (best estimate)
  • Location: Gretna, NE

Zeke is a super sweet, very 2 y.o. boy. Zeke's previous owner told us that a change in her circumstances made it very hard for her to continue caring for  Zeke. When she lost her home, Zeke had nowhere to go and he found himself in an outdoor pen at a friend's vacant property. This was extremely hard for such a family-oriented, loving pup. Zeke's previous owner tells that Zeke, already a slim pup, lost a lot of weight during this stressful transition. When the days started getting colder, Zeke's owner made the very difficult but right decision to find rescue for him, so that Zeke could once again enjoy the warmth and stability of a loving home.

Zeke is now gaining weight and doing wonderfully well in his foster home. He is fabulous with the kids. Good with the cat. He is a very sweet, fun, lovable boy. He LOVES, LOVES, LOVES to play with his ball and he could simply fetch all day long. Zeke is a sweet affectionate boy that can be just a tad shy with strangers, but who warms up quickly and loves to cuddle and hug you with his paw!

Zeke is a typical German Shepherd youngster with lots of energy. Zeke loves to go for walks, runs, play, fetch, and be on the go all the time. He loves his people and really enjoys car rides and outings. We were told by his previous owner that he can clear a 6ft fence if he wants to, so we are requiring at least a 6ft fence and a vigilant owner who will NEVER put him and leave him outside alone, unsupervised, not even for short periods of time. Zeke has shown no desire to escape in his foster home, but we'd rather be cautious, especially during any adjustment periods.

Zeke is an especially sweet, gentle, smart, athletic boy who will delight an active owner with his love, loyalty, and the enthusiasm with which he embraces life.
